Tuscany in the rain.

From Venice we headed south into Tuscany in the pouring rain. Via the tunnels on the E35 towards Florence. The first stop was Pistoia and a walk into the old city. Set around its central Piazza del Duomo are the Cathedral of San Zeno, which has a silver altar, and the octagonal Battistero di San Giovanni in Corte baptistery.

The next day we went over the hills in the pouring rain to Bagni di Lucca and stopped in a free Aire near the river. It has two famous bridges on an 18c suspension bridge the Ponte delle Catene and the other a 11c pedestrian bridge the Ponte della Maddalena.

The next day we headed down to a large car park for an overnight stop in Lucca.

Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. We met a couple from Abingdon who had not long set off on their long travels.
